Brabant Day, Heeze

Theme of the year 2010 "Voor eeuwig vastgelegd"
   (Recorded for ever)

Brabant Day (really the nine-day Brabantsedag) is a cultural festival so multifaceted as so overflowing with creativity that nine days are too short to take everything in. But these days are all you have, at this, the fiftythird edition of this spectacular event. And Heeze is duly proud of this magnificent festival that spreads the fame of the town well beyond the parish boundaries. However, this friendly place is not only famous for its Brabant Day, but also its rich history and its medieval castle, situated in the south-eastern corner of the Province of Brabant, close to Eindhoven and the Belgian border. The absolute high point of the Brabant Day is the impressive procession, traditionally held on the last Sunday of August, this year on Sunday 29 August.

The two kilometre-long parade, unique in Europe, is based on the centuries-old history of the Duchy of Brabant. This parade succeeds each year in amazing the spectators through its entirely unique interpretation of the past. The parade is an explosion of originality and expression that attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Heeze, every year. Nineteen groups, each with on average one hundred players, pass through the centre of Heeze over a period of several hours. The central feature of all their contributions is made up of the colossal parade floats. Some groups even require several different floats to successfully present their historical scenes. They are impressive examples of creative skill, many with moving parts, music and built-in theatrical techniques. These parade floats are so remarkable that they far exceed comparison with the floats of the famous carnival parades of Germany’s Rhineland. Just as important as the imposing, rolling backdrop are the enthusiastic performances by the participants on and around their floats. Many of these ‘travelling’ players interact with the crowds lining the streets. Brabant Day this year is being organised for the fiftythird time. The theme “Voor eeuwig vastgelegd” (Recorded for ever) will form a truly contemporary interpretation of the photographical recorded history of Brabant between 1850 and 1960 in both the Dutch and Belgian parts of what was formerly the Grand Duchy of Brabant..

Between 21 and 29 August, there will be daily podium performances including singing, dance, theatre and cabaret, literary readings and (art) exhibitions. And on 29 August, the grand cultural history parade will pass by the numerous stands and roadside terraces in the heart of Heeze. Throughout the day, from 11 a.m., there will be music, dance and (street) theatre for young and old, focused in the area around the town hall. The grand parade starts at 2 p.m., preceded from 1 p.m. onwards by the combined parade of the marching bands.
